Preserving a Legacy, Embracing Change

When news broke in March that Fat Tire Farm would be closing its doors at NW 27th and Thurman after 40 years, it was a tough pill to swallow for off-road cycling enthusiasts across the region. The loss of yet another bike shop in that part of town, especially one with a legacy like FTF, was a significant blow. However, in a surprising turn of events, Cyclepath owner Michael Jellinek and Fat Tire Farm owner Park Chambers came to an agreement, and the deal was formalized at the end of last week.

A Natural Fit

Jellinek describes the partnership as a “somewhat natural fit,” citing the shared passion for cycling as the driving force behind the collaboration. He also plans to hire a few former Fat Tire Farm employees, who will join the Cyclepath team, and post job listings on BikePortland for more staff next week.

Enhancing Offerings and Aesthetic

The new Cyclepath West will offer a wider selection of bikes and accessories, including mountain, gravel, and road bikes. Fat Tire Farm was renowned for its laser focus on high-quality mountain bikes, but Jellinek plans to diversify the offerings, stocking a mix of bikes to cater to different riding styles. In addition to bikes, parts, and accessories, Jellinek will also stock a range of trail running shoes and gear, taking advantage of Forest Park’s proximity.

Business Perspective and Community Impact

From a business perspective, Jellinek sees an opportunity to serve the west side of Portland, where he notes that the community was flooded with new faces after the closure of West End Bikes and Fat Tire Farm. The increased demand led to a six-week wait for service, which Jellinek believes can be alleviated by splitting the labor between the neighborhoods.

A New Aesthetic

Customers can expect a vastly different aesthetic once Cyclepath West is open. Jellinek and his team are working on custom fixtures and displays from industry partners, including Chris King, Speedland, ENVE, SRAM, and others. Portland-based artist Dustin Klein has already completed custom paintings in the shop, and the exterior will feature a new mural that Jellinek describes as a “homage to Portland, Forest Park, and our cycling community.”

Expansion and Optimism

The decision to expand to another location in a challenging economic climate and amidst tariff turmoil in the bike industry takes courage and optimism. Jellinek acknowledges that it’s nerve-wracking but believes that the new location will meet the community’s needs. “It’s right for the community, and I think we will be able to meet a lot of need. I’m stoked!”

Opening Date and Updates

The new Cyclepath West is expected to open in two weeks. Stay tuned to the shop’s Instagram account for updates, information, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the new location.
